Many children dream of one day entering the medical field as a doctor, nurse, or other medical professional. Medicine is an invaluable and demanding field, and it may be challenging for young people to get their foot in the door. Along the way, the guidance of a mentor is invaluable.
Jacob Nemitz recently graduated from the University of Buffalo, ready to start his career as a patient care technician and excited to give back to the community. He discovered iCouldBe while searching for ways to volunteer remotely — a must, given his busy schedule. Remembering his experience being guided and mentored by Laura Van Niel, his former instructor in the New Visions Medical Careers Program, he felt inspired to continue the cycle of mentorship by sharing his wisdom and experiences with young people.
Carina is an enthusiastic, hardworking high school junior passionate about helping others and interested in nursing: a perfect mentor-mentee match for Jacob, who was thrilled to pass on his knowledge of the medical field. Alongside Jacob, she has learned about his experience in the field, sought support and advice from him and others, and started to explore the many options available to her.
Jacob says, “I remember being Carina’s age and sharing the same amazement for the medical field, wanting nothing more than to finish high school and begin the next phase of life. Being able to relate to her has pushed me to be the best mentor I can be so that I can help her keep this enthusiasm for the long run, and ideally avoid some of the mistakes that I made."
Aside from discussing Carina’s future career development and their shared love of the medical field, the two have connected over books! Both love reading, and often discuss books they’ve read and give each other recommendations.
Through the entirely remote and sometimes asynchronous nature of iCouldBe’s program, Jacob and Carina have built a strong rapport. He shows up consistently for her, responds promptly, and creates a space where openness and vulnerability on both sides are encouraged. Jacob also makes sure to be positive and supportive, and he often asks Carina engaging, insightful questions to encourage self-reflection. Finally, he doesn’t shy away from one of the more challenging parts of being a mentor: holding your mentee accountable. No matter what, Jacob ensures that Carina remains committed to trying her best and meeting her full potential.
In giving back to his community, Jacob himself has also gained something: "This experience and Carina's enthusiasm have helped me to verify that I truly enjoy guiding young people’s academic and professional careers... Serving as an iCouldBe mentor has pushed me to want to continue doing this long-term."
In spring of 2024, Jacob was nominated for the 2024 MENTOR of the Year Awards due to his dedication to mentoring Carina. Do you have a passion you can share with a young person? Give mentoring a try and explore opportunities here.
