Paying It Forward: Bob, Carlo, and Jack’s Mentoring Stories

Human connection is powerful. It has the ability to change the course of a life, or in Bob Preti’s case, three. With the knowledge that mentorship is a major commitment that requires time, energy, and care, Bob’s passion for it led him to mentor two young people — Jake and Carlo — impacting not only their lives but also his own.

Throughout his life, Bob had many mentors. “There are countless people, and countless stories, that brought me to where I am today and who I am,” he said. “I want to give that back. We all have the same insecurities, same doubts and weakness, but I had opportunity.” Today, with Student Sponsor Partners, he’s able to do exactly that: create opportunities for, ignite passion in, and inspire his mentees, ultimately paying forward the mentorship he received over the years.

Bob and Carlo met in 2022. Although “it took time to get into a cadence together,” in Bob’s words, the two have become close and share passions for art and basketball, which Carlo plays at Bob’s alma mater, Cardinal Hayes High School. They enjoy bonding over a meal or at a museum, and Bob often spends time with Carlo’s family as well. As Carlo eventually prepares to apply to colleges, Bob is excited about supporting him through this process and taking him to tour his alma mater, Fordham College.

Jake is currently a sophomore and a football player at the University of Pennsylvania. When he met Bob three years ago, they clicked instantly, and Bob was struck by the high school senior’s work ethic, initiative, and listening skills. Together, the two love having thoughtful conversations about art and going out for pizza or Italian food. According to Jake, “My relationship with Bob stands out because of his authenticity and thoughtfulness. He creates an environment where I can be my full, unapologetic self while constantly striving for self-improvement.”

Through mentoring two students at once, Bob has learned to adapt his mentorship style to fit and support each of his unique mentees. He has also enjoyed learning about the lives of his mentees, the obstacles they face, their goals, and their hobbies (like Jake’s poetry!) and loves cheering them on in football and basketball. Over the years, he’s aimed to pass on as much knowledge and guidance as possible so that they can both continue to grow and succeed.

“More than just a mentor, I view Bob as family,” Jake said. “Our bond is built on his genuine care and commitment to helping me and my loved ones thrive in all aspects of life. He has been a primary example of resiliency not only physically but mentally. I can confidently say, I want to be like Bob when I grow up.”

Bob’s dedication to mentoring led him to be nominated for the 2024 MENTOR of the Year Awards. If you share Bob’s passion and are interested in taking the next step to become a mentor, you can explore opportunities here.
